Annnd… Always look on the Bright side of Life..

February 20, 2008

This should be my theme song of sorts. Like always playing in the background whenever i’m around. So come on people cheer up and sing along..

Some things in life are bad,

They can really make you mad,

Other things just make you swear and curse,

When you’re chewing life’s gristle,

Don’t grumble,

Give a whistle

And this’ll help things turn out for the best…

And…

Always look on the bright side of life (whistle)

Always look on the bright side of life (whistle)

If life seems jolly rotten,

There’s something you’ve forgotten,

And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.

When you’re feeling in the dumps,

Don’t be silly chumps.

Just purse your lips and whistle.

That’s the thing.

And…

Always look on the bright side of life. (whistle)

Always look on the bright side of life. (whistle)

For life is quite absurd,

And death’s the final word.

You must always face the curtain with a bow.

Forget about your sin.

Give the audience a grin.

Enjoy it. It’s your last chance, anyhow.

So…

Always look on the bright side of death, (whistle)

Just before you draw your terminal breath. (whistle)

Life’s a piece of shit,

When you look at it.

Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke it’s true.

You’ll see it’s all a show.

 Keep’em laughing as you go.

Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And…

Always look on the bright side of life. (whistle)

Always look on the right side of life. (whistle)

Always look on the bright side of life! x 8 until music fades

One of the weirdest fight scenes ever..

February 15, 2008

Like the title said, i think this has to be one of the weirdest fight scenes flimed ever. I’m quite a fan of old fight scenes especially the ones from Jackie Chan before he became famous. But this clip really takes the cake, and the icing and as well as the cherry on it.  Enjoy..

Where the World’s Wealth is stored

February 10, 2008

The following is an article from Channel News Asia, which was taken from the Forbes webpage.

Titled Where the most Wealth is stored

Just a brief excerpt:

If you guessed the U.S. government, you’re right, sort of. Most people automatically think of the bullion vault at Fort Knox, Ky. The military installation does indeed hold a good stash of the U.S. reserves, about 147 million ounces (out of 261 million total as of December.) But the Federal Reserve Bank of New York holds the prize as the world’s biggest known stockpile of gold, some 550,000 glistening bars of the stuff buried deep into the bedrock of lower Manhattan. That’s $203.3 billion worth of gold in a single place. Just 2% to 5% of it is owned by the U.S. government, though. The rest is owned by foreign countries

The article continues to talk about other precious commodities such as silver, diamonds, platinum, emeralds and where they are stored in large quantities.

Some interesting facts that might come in useful some day:

Around 90% of the world’s rubies come from Myanmar. So if you have a ruby in your possesion you have mostly probably donated to the military junta’s coffers. haha..

The world’s biggest Sovereign Wealth Funds include Singapore’s GIC with a estimated value of $US 330 Billion. woah..

And the most valuable commodity but which is not for sale: Plutonium, with estimates of above $US 10,000 per ounce.

My take on the Planet of the Apes

February 9, 2008

A good friend once asked me, “Do you believe in God?”.

And i replied, “I’ve just read the Planet of the Apes. There are some parts of the book which might answer your question”

And so today, i shall attempt to write what i found so fascinating out of a otherwise ‘nothing spectacular’ book.

Well if you do not know the story, here is it in a nutshell. (or at least for the latest movie) It is the 22th Century, Man has explored beyond the Solar System and is exploring even further. To undertake especially dangerous flights, this flag ship has trained a bunch of great apes-chimpanzeez, gorillas, etc- the ability to fly and as well basic speech.

And so the story starts by the ship sending a chimpanzee into a electric storm, who promptly gets lost. The main character of the book chases after it and also gets lost in the storm. He then crash lands into this Earth-like planet. Once there he realises humans are at the lowest rung of society, treated as slaves and as outcastes. The other great apes are cultured and even have a religion and they worship a god called ‘Semos’.

In short, what the main character realises is that, due to the electrical storm he was thrown forward 500 years into the future. And that in ‘normal’ time, his flag ship had come looking for him, got stuck in the same electric storm and landed in an empty planet. (in normal time).  It was the apes and humans from that ship which formed the basis of life upon which our hero stumbles 500 years later. Confusing? Time travel is always confusing.

Ok that’s slightly interesting, but what did fascinate me?

The fact that the apes had a religion. Rather, created one.

The god of the apes, Semos, was actually one of the original apes which sort went crazy and started attacking humans. The apes in the book quite totally ruled out sharing power and their lives with humans because they knew apes were the ‘chosen’ ones. Simply because the apes were created in (their) god’s image. As such, the apes even found it preposterous that humans once controlled apes, when the hero tried to explain things.

As a reader, I wondered why were the apes so reluctant to change their ways when it was so obvious (to me) that they were in the wrong. Simply because they did not know and were afraid of the unknown and thus found solace in their religion, which sort of involved from hero-worship of Semos.

It wouldn’t take a genius to infer what i’m talking about. But before i start to rant and carry on going out of point, I’ll like to leave behind a quote from a real genius.

I’m not an atheist and I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. -  Albert Einstein

Blast From the Not too distant past

February 2, 2008

Finally logged on my blog after 6 months of inactivity. Kind of a huge irony when my previous post was titled “Not Dead Yet”

I wouldn’t be brave enough to title this blog “Back from the dead” only to visit once more 6 months later. But logging back on after 6 months and reading what i wrote about more than a year ago is really interesting. For instance, I actually find some of my arcticles funny and wonder how the inspiration came to me back then.

Whether I like or not, this has become a written part of my life, so this wil come in useful when i write my auto biography maybe several decades down the road. =)  Or i could just follow the various EPL players and sportsmen who deem fit to write to a book titled, “My Life” when they are just 21. Right.
